“Messiah Sing” in Hudson

Diamond Opera Theater (formerly Hudson Chamber Opera) will present a “Messiah Sing” at Christ Church Episcopal, 431 Union Street, on the Courthouse Square in Hudson on Monday, December 4, 2006 at 7:30 pm. The audience is invited to sing the choruses and will be joined by guest soloists from the opera company: Mary Hack, Nancy Allen Lundy, Brian Cheney and Steve Dahlin. Pianist Michael Clement will be the accompanist.

Mezzo-soprano Mary Hack, Artistic Administrator of the opera company, has sung leading roles in several of their productions, including Mennoti’s “The Medium” in 2005. Soprano Nancy Allen Lundy was the female lead in last spring’s production of Mollicone’s “The Face on the Barroom Floor” and has performed with major opera companies throughout the world. Tenor Brian Cheny has sung the role of Alfredo in “La Traviata” and will perform as a soloist at Carnegie Hall in their presentation of Mozart’s “Coronation Mass.” Steve Dahlin has sung with the Seattle Opera Chorus and has performed in many Gilbert and Sullivan operettas including “HMS Pinafore.”

Written in 1741, The Messiah, is Handel’s most popular work and one of the most renowned pieces of sacred music. Every year during the holiday season, performances of “The Messiah” take place across America and around the world.

Gwen Gould, Music Director of the opera company, will conduct the Messiah. Ms. Gould was the founder of the West Village Chorale (1971), a community chorus in Greenwich Village. As one of the first proponents of the “Open Sing,” she instituted the West Village Chorale’s Summer Sings in 1972, the Columbia Festival Orchestra’s Sunset Sings in 1993 and was a guest conductor for New York Choral Society’s Summer Sings for many years. Community sings allow choral music enthusiasts to participate in the singing of great choral masterpieces under the baton of an experienced conductor, with music scores provided. Ms. Gould said, “This beloved work is exhilarating and uplifting to sing and has engaged thousands of people around the world, singers and listeners alike, in this annual ritual. I hope all Columbia County music lovers will join us. For those who can’t sing – join us anyway. Sit in the alto section and experience the energy and power of this magnificent work from the heart of the chorus!”

Everyone is invited to join with your neighbors and fellow choral singers in this joyous holiday tradition. You, the audience, can sing the monumental choruses of Handel’s “Messiah” bolstered by a quartet of professional singers provided by Diamond Opera Theater to sing the solos. Scores will be provided or you may bring your own. Tickets are $8 (Diamond Opera Theater members - $7) and students with an ID are free. Reservations are not necessary.
